It’s Oscar time, 2024!

Remember last March when the Academy Awards justifiably showered Everything Everywhere All At Once with kudos, statues and everything bagels to celebrate that extraordinary film in all its bizarre and confusing glory? When the multiverse was the explanation for everything weird that had happened for the last fifty years or so?

flicksthatmakesmesick remembers, because an exploding popcorn machine cut a hole in the fabric of time and this site wound up in an entirely different place––a universe where movies were watched in germ free theaters with no one sitting next to you texting (and then threatening to fight you when you asked them to stop) and popcorn didn’t cost $9 for a small bag. In this alternative unicorn of a projection booth, flicks churned out witty and thoughtful movie reviews on a weekly basis and people clicked on the website nonstop, grateful for the educated opinion of films that guided their own movie going experiences. It’s an excellent verse to be in!

If you find that timeline, please let me know, because the one I’m in says that I haven’t added a review since the last Oscars were presented. I guess the year kind of got away from me. But I saw all the movies!

Flicks is back where it belongs, ranking films with the patented rating system The Popcorn Kernels of Truth! The Barf Bag Rating System has been aired out and retired, as directors seldom use the shaky cam anymore that induced nausea and vomiting among sensitive movie goers.

Over the next month until we wind up together again at the Academy Awards (March 10!), I will put the Ten Best Picture Nominees reviews up here for your education and delight. And if I don’t get all ten done, I will blame my hot dog fingers for not being able to type.

(Note: The double delight of two features in one afternoon that was Barbenheimer got me thinking about perfect pairings. Each review will combine two different nominees that either complement each other or have absolutely nothing in common (it’s important to have an out if this doesn’t work).

The nominees are:

1. Barbie
2. Poor Things
3. Oppenheimer
4. The Zone of Interest
5. American Fiction
6. The Holdovers
7. Killers of the Flower Moon
8. Maestro
9. Past Lives
10. Anatomy of a Fall

Coming soon: Barbie/Poor Things
